Emory’s birthday gift from Mommy and Daddy this year was her very own American Girl doll. A while back, my mom got my old Molly doll down from the attic and Emory has been playing with it for months. We’ve also been reading the books at bedtime, and she has grown to love the stories. After her last day of cheerleading camp, Emory, Mom and I jumped in the car and headed to Atlanta to visit the American Girl store and let Emory pick out her doll, and for Grandmama to buy her some outfits and accessories!
We told her about her trip when we celebrated her birthday at the beach, so she knew she was going for a little over a week beforehand. At first she was a little overwhelmed by the idea of picking which doll she wanted, but we looked and looked {and looked and looked} through the catalog prior to going, knowing she would be even more overwhelmed once we were in the store if she didn’t have some sort of direction. She finally decided she wanted Kit, mostly because it looked like her and she liked Kit’s dog, Grace.
We spotted Kit soon after we entered the store and she was excited! She immediately got her doll…
And then grabbed the phone to take pictures of her ‘wish list’. She knew she was gonna get some stuff while we were there, and then she was gonna ask for some things for Christmas.
After taking pictures of the things she wanted {which she was actually very picky about. She didn’t want every single item, which surprised me.}, we headed to the Salon for Molly to have a makeover. I got Molly when I was seven, so she’s almost 23 years old and was in major need of a little sprucin’ up! Molly got a spa robe and then enjoyed a body scrub.
She got a little facial and then it was time to work some magic on her hair.
As you watch your doll getting worked on, they give you tips on how to keep her well groomed, which Emory has repeated verbatim every time she tells someone about Molly’s makeover. She took it quite seriously!
Molly’s hair got a trim {both her bangs and her length, if you must know.}…
Then she got her traditional braids.
With ribbons to match her outfit, of course.
The ‘stylist’ said that hair had overtime been pulled out of the right side of Molly’s head, which made the right braid much thinner, but for being so old I thought she looked great!
Emory made sure we captured her newly trimmed bangs, as well as her braids.
With Molly looking like new, we grabbed a few more items {including a doll tea set because Emory and Rosie had already planned a tea party for their dolls to meet!} and then headed to pay. Once we paid, they took Kit out for Emory to hold. Can you tell she was in heaven?!?!With all our goodies {some for now, and some to put away for Christmas} we headed out.
I’ve already let Emory know that we will not become those crazy people that get new dolls year after year {although I’m not sure who wanted to buy more stuff…Emory, my mom or me!} . She thought long and hard about which doll she wanted {and I’m so glad she got a historic doll} and she knows we will slowly collect things for her. She was a little confused as to whether or not she could get other character’s accessories for Kit, so once she realized that Kit could wear anything, she was excited. She even picked out a new outfit for Molly. It was a fun trip and we’re already looking forward to coming back!
